Introduction

Army Ordnance Corps is responsible to provide logistics support to the Indian Army during war and peace.

Functions

The logistics function of the Army Ordnance Corps involves the mechanics of provisioning and procuring of all stores required to raise and maintain an efficient and effective fighting army. The aim is to make available all kinds of stores to all units of the army at the right time, in right quantity, at the right place and right cost. The inventory range covers every conceivable requirement of the soldier from clothing to weapons, from a needle to a tank and also all munitions except fuel, fodder and medicines. The inventory management functions involve provisioning, procurement, receipt, accounting, storage, issue, transportation and disposal of all clothing, equipment, weapons, vehicles, ammunition and spares of all kinds. It is no mean feat to manage one of the largest and the most complex logistics effort in the world.

1634 Entry of the East India Company
1639 Creation of Presidencies of Bengal, Madras & Bombay.
08 Apr 1775 Board of Ordnance Constituted in Bengal Presidency, Ordnance is born.
1884 Amalgamation of Three Presidencies to create Ordnance Department in India.
01 Apr 1884 First Director General of Ordnance (DGO) appointed.
1911 Indian Ordnance Department sub divided into three main streams : manufacture (factories), storage & distribution (arsenals) & inspection.
1914 Officers of Indian Ordnance Department wear regular uniform.
18 Jul 1922 Indian Army Ordnance Corps comes into being.
01 Apr 1939 IAOC made responsible for technical maintenance of all mechanical vehicles.
1943 Reorganisation of Depots & the birth of Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers from Ordnance.
1947 Partition of assets. IAOC assets locked in either dominions either dominions automatically inherited by Army concerned. India inherits 16 Factories, Pakistan gets 6 Crore rupees as compensation. Brig EA Rodgriues, MBE the first DOS of India.
1949 Re-designation of Corps as "Army Ordnance Corps" Re-organisation of Ordnance branch at Army Headquarters headed by Director Ordnance Service.
1954 Design and adoption of new Badge.
